Fluid Measurement Probes

Digital 7-Hole Probes

Self-contained digital 7-hole probes that measure three velocity components, with fast-response and miniature options for wind tunnel, motorsport and UAV testing.

Digital 7-Hole Probes

Three Velocity Components From One Self-Contained Probe

A digital 7-hole probe combines a multi-hole probe head with onboard pressure sensors and analog-to-digital conversion in a single unit, so there are no pressure lines to run to a separate scanner. It measures three components of velocity, absolute static pressure, local fluid temperature and humidity, and includes an inertial sensor for automatic alignment and vibration warning.

Three configurations are available: a standard in-line system with quick-change probe stings, a fast-response version with dynamic calibration for turbulence measurement, and a miniature version about 12 mm in diameter for tight installations and UAV flight control.

Why K-Tec Systems

More Than a Probe Supplier

K-Tec Systems manufactures the sensing and cabling around the probe in Ferndale, Michigan, so one U.S. team can support the whole measurement chain, from thermocouples and RTDs to wire harnesses.

Manufactured and supported in the U.S.

K-Tec Systems builds custom thermocouples, RTDs, wire harnesses and test stands at our Ferndale, Michigan, facility. The probe, the temperature sensing and the cabling can be specified together, with one U.S. team behind the order.

Flow and temperature at the same point

K-Tec thermocouples and RTDs can be integrated into compatible probe designs, so total pressure and temperature are measured at the same location.

Applications

Where Digital 7-Hole Probes Are Used

Wind tunnel testing

Three-component velocity measurement for low- and high-speed aerodynamics, without pressure lines.

Motorsport

Package dimensions and communications similar to other 5- and 7-hole probes, with factory calibration that allows probe interchangeability.

UAV flight instrumentation

Turbulent flow measurement on light unmanned aircraft, with a polymer enclosure option and a UART interface on the miniature version.

FAQ

Digital 7-Hole Probes: Frequently Asked Questions

How is a 7-hole probe different from a 5-hole probe?

The manufacturer states that seven holes give increased angular resolution and lower uncertainty than five-hole probes. For standard 5-hole configurations see 5-hole probes.

Does it need pressure lines or a separate scanner?

No. The pressure sensors and analog-to-digital conversion are inside the probe, which streams data over USB 2.0, RS232 or UDP Ethernet; Ethernet requires an additional communications adaptor. The miniature version has onboard USB and UART, with an optional CAN adaptor.

What is the fast-response version for?

Turbulent flow measurement. It is dynamically calibrated and reports turbulence intensity along with three velocity components at 1000 Hz data acquisition. A frequency response figure is confirmed at quotation.

Can the probe tip and sting be changed?

Yes. The standard system uses quick-change stings down to 2 mm OD, and the fast-response probe stings can be removed for maintenance or purge. The miniature version supports straight, L-shaped, hook-shaped and plug configurations.

What finishes and digital options are available on the 3D-printed probes?

The manufacturer offers its additively manufactured stainless steel probes in raw, coarse and fine surface finishes, in 7-hole, yaw and rake designs or a custom geometry. Probes can be supplied with barbed stings for use with a separate scanner, or as a fully digital system with a miniature 8-channel pressure scanner in the probe body.

How do I order one?

Contact K-Tec Systems with your application, speed range and installation constraints. Configuration, lead time and price are confirmed at quotation.
